Māori Rock-Art Puppets

Te Reo Māori Audio E-Book

Māori Rock-Art, Aotearoa NZ.

We are committed to raising the awareness and appreciation of our country's māori rock-art heritage. As well as touring our Māori-rock-art puppet show nationally for the past three years, it has also been adapted into a te reo māori learning resource for our nation's school children called TE REREKA WAIRUA O POURAKAHUA. While funding from the Ministry of Education has enabled us to produce a Māori language version, we have not had any support to produce an English language version of this story. We have succeeded in recording the English version, but have yet to be able to edit it. We are seeking patronage that will enable us to complete the post-production work on this version, so that our unique audio-e book will be accessable to far more people.  Patrons will be sent a FREE link to the English version of the completed audio e-book and discounts to our unique range of māori rock art puppet clothing and accessories.

A DISTANT ISLAND

Pourakahua was different from other people. Her head was tiny and pointy. Her legs were short and twisted. Her arms were longer than long and her hands were like giant clam shells. Poor Pourakahua was treated badly by her family as well.  They made her work all day, every day in the kῡmara gardens and at night she had to sleep there as well.

Chapter 1 Tee Shirts

ŌPIHI CAVE

Pourakahua flew slowly up the Ōpihi river, Sunning themselves on a rock at the cave entrance was an enormous gecko and an equally large lizard, with two tails and no head. Upon seeing them, Pourakahua descended to land in front of the cave.

Chapter 2 Tee shirts.

BAT CAVE

"Quiet now my brave bat brigade! My super-sharp, ultra-sonic ears are telling me that a most bizarre flying creature comes our way…. Form a fortress of protection in front of me my faithful furry Battalion! Let not this airborne oddity attack your beloved elder Bat."

DOG ROCK

Pourakahua flew around until she came across a huge limestone outcrop, with the appearance of the head of a dog. It looks rather like a great big Beagle. She descended to talk with the cave creatures living at the base of Dog Rock.

chapter 4 Tee Shirts

MOA VALLEY

"That dancing looked like so much fun. I’ve never seen birds dancing by the river before."

"Well we just love our River Dancing. I’m not much good at it though – all that heel, toe, heel, toe – I’ve got two left feet, or is it two right feet? Or is it two flat feet?  I can’t tell… Top of the morning to ya."

Chapter 5 tee Shirts

EAGLE ROCK

"My name is Pourakahua.  I have been searching for my kind for a long time. I had hoped that we were kin, but I can see we are not… I’ll be on my way now, before the chicks’ mother returns."
